Bus-Sized Asteroid Will Flyby Earth Today, Only Days After Being Discovered by NASA

Small, undetected asteroids flying by between the earth and moon happen once or twice a year. A direct hit could cause some serious localized damage but chances are slim that populated areas would be impacted as 70% of the earth's surface is ocean. The Near Earth Objects Monitoring Program conducted by NASA's JPL has identified more than half the asteroids that have a chance of hitting the earth. About every 5 years or so, a large, previously undetected asteroid is identified less than 30 days before approaching the earth.
