Mountain lions usually have litters of 2 or 3 cubs each year. Based on the estimated number of mountain lions in Colorado, the total number of cubs born each year is somewhere in the hundreds to low thousands range. They hang around with mom for 18 months before going out on their own to establish their own territories. It is at this crucial stage that the young mountain lions learn to hunt prey on their own and a very small number of them don't get it right. Many of the 10 mountain lion attacks that have occurred in Colorado since 1970, including the recent attack of a 5-year-old boy in Aspen, were by juvenile mountain lions.
