Small, undetected asteroids flying by between the earth and moon happen once or twice a year. A direct hit could cause some serious localized damage but chances are slim that populated areas would be impacted as 70% of the earth's surface is ocean. The Near Earth Objects Monitoring Program conducted by NASA's JPL has identified more than half the asteroids that have a chance of hitting the earth. About every 5 years or so, a large, previously undetected asteroid is identified less than 30 days before approaching the earth.

A college ski champ on an intermediate run. Could be that he snagged a crusty layer under the powder. My neighbor recently broke a leg when the ski burrowed into the crusty layer and went sideways while she continued pointing down the hill.

Although many of the visitors were form foreign countries, this works out to the equivalent of almost the entire US population visiting a national park in one year!
